Varsity athletics are deeply ingrained in the rich history and culture of Saint Mary’s University with 13 different teams including: basketball, cross-country, hockey, football, rugby, soccer, track & field and volleyball.

Our client is seeking a Director of Athletics & Recreation to provide vision, leadership, management, administration and coordination of a broad-based athletics and recreation portfolio which includes program, activities and services at the varsity, intramural, club and recreation levels. Reporting to the Vice-President, Finance & Administration, the Director will build on the Saint Mary’s tradition of excellence and achievement in sport, while encouraging participation and support of students, staff, faculty, alumni and the community. The Director will provide strategic leadership that recognizes the positive role of athletics and recreation within a robust academic environment and actively promotes integration of extra-curricular and curricular activities in accordance with the strategic direction of the University.

The Director develops strategic and operational plans for current and future programs as well as a comprehensive long-term strategy for all matters that enhance the student experience and ensures a long term sustainable plan for the provision of services. Overseeing all University recreational facilities, programs and resources, the Director ensures expectations are delivered with a quality that enhances reputation and optimizes revenue. The successful candidate will represent the University within national sport  AUS and USport  governing  bodies with  a  deep  and current  understanding  of  their rules and regulations. The Director provides direction, monitors performance and ongoing support to coaches, staff, participants and students-athletes in programs at all levels of sport including AUS/USport, intramural, recreation, club and programs. The Director establishes a partnership of collaboration with the Office of Advancement in alumni and community relations, fundraising, sponsorship and development efforts. The Director seeks out and realizes revenue opportunities for facilities, teams and programs, particularly sponsorship and strategic partnerships.

As the ideal candidate, you will have a post-secondary education in Business Management/Sports Management, along with a minimum five years’ experience in a senior leadership role. You will have a proven track record as a top performer managing in a complex environment. You have energy and passion for all things athletics and youth, with a deep understanding of the importance of academics. You have a charismatic personality, along with a reputation of integrity and trust in the business/sport community.
