Manager, Corporate Accounting & Reporting

Atlantic Corporation Limited (ACL), part of the Shannon Group of Companies, is seeking a Manager, Corporate Accounting & Reporting to join their team in Halifax. This is a unique opportunity for a CPA who is looking to move beyond a traditional accounting role and gain exposure to a broad portfolio of privately held businesses spanning transportation, healthcare, real estate, construction, information technology, and more.

From industry-leading brands such as Seaboard Transport and Shannex to an extensive real estate portfolio, ACL serves as the corporate office supporting a diverse and growing group of entrepreneurial companies. The ACL Finance team sits at a unique intersection of operations, governance, executive leadership, shareholders, and the Board of Directors – providing both strategic support and critical oversight across the organization.

For the right person, this role offers something few accounting opportunities can: a front-row seat to how successful businesses operate, grow, acquire, and evolve. Few organizations can offer the breadth of experience and exposure available through ACL. This team helps shape the future of one of Atlantic Canada’s most successful privately held business groups. There truly is no other experience like it in Nova Scotia! This is a rare opportunity to see an entire business from the centre of it.

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Senior Director, Finance & Accounting at ACL, with a dotted-line relationship to the Director of Finance & Administration within the Realty Group, this position bridges both corporate and operating-company finance. At ACL, you’ll work across a wide variety of businesses, stakeholders, and projects while helping drive financial reporting, analysis, governance, technical accounting initiatives, audits, and acquisition-related activities. At the same time, with your Realty Group responsibilities, you’ll provide accounting leadership and reporting support to the Realty Group, which oversees more than 100 properties across multiple legal entities.

This is a highly visible role that requires both technical expertise and business curiosity. One day you may be reviewing consolidated financial results, researching accounting implications of a transaction, or supporting acquisition due diligence. The next day, you could be partnering with operational leaders, preparing Board-level reporting, or helping resolve accounting matters across the real estate portfolio. No two days are exactly alike.

What You’ll Be Responsible For:

As part of the ACL team, you will:

  • Lead consolidated accounting and financial reporting across a diversified group of companies.
  • Support accounting and reporting activities for investment and holding companies.
  • Review, analyze, and interpret financial statements across multiple industries.
  • Participate in annual external audit processes across the group.
  • Conduct financial analysis and special projects supporting executive decision-making.
  • Assist with internal audit initiatives and governance activities.
  • Research and develop technical accounting policies and reporting guidance.
  • Support financial due diligence activities related to mergers and acquisitions.
  • Contribute to financial systems administration, controls, and security.
  • Collaborate closely with senior leadership, shareholders, Board representatives, and operating company finance teams.

As part of the Realty Group team, you will:

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Support accurate and timely month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Prepare and review journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Analyze financial results, identify trends, and explain variances.
  • Ensure compliance with ASPE reporting requirements.
  • Prepare reporting packages for executive leadership and the Board.
  • Support annual budgeting and rolling forecast processes.
  • Participate in annual external audits.
  • Contribute to system improvements, automation initiatives, and process enhancements.
  • Provide technical accounting guidance and review work completed by junior team members.

Who We’re Looking For:

This is not a role for someone seeking a narrowly defined accounting position.

We’re looking for an accounting professional who enjoys variety, embraces complexity, and has the confidence to move work forward independently while managing multiple priorities.

  • A CPA designation.
  • Approximately 3-5 years post-designation experience.
  • A blend of public accounting and industry experience (strongly preferred).
  • Experience preparing and reviewing financial statements.
  • Audit, technical accounting, or financial reporting experience.
  • Strong understanding of accounting standards and reporting frameworks.
  • Operational accounting experience and sound business judgment.
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with Dynamics GP (Great Plains) considered an asset.

Most importantly, you’re someone who:

  • Is naturally curious and enjoys learning new businesses.
  • Can identify accounting implications behind operational decisions.
  • Works proactively rather than waiting for direction.
  • Balances attention to detail with the ability to see the bigger picture.
  • Is comfortable interacting with leaders at all levels of an organization.
  • Thrives in an environment where priorities can shift quickly.
  • Values confidentiality, professionalism, and trust.

You are someone that appreciates:

  • High trust and autonomy.
  • Exposure to senior decision-makers.
  • Significant variety in their responsibilities.
  • Continuous learning.
  • Long-term career growth within a diversified group of companies.
