Venor is delighted to collaborate with a well-established Atlantic Canadian fuel station and convenience store operator in their quest for a Controller to join their team.

Responsibilities and vision: 

Reporting directly to and working in partnership with the CEO and CFO, the Controller, will be responsible for overseeing the entire finance and accounting operational functions including the traditional accounting responsibilities such as AP, AR, payroll, cash flow management, budgeting, financial management reporting, and cash flow forecasting. Collaborating with all members of the business and serving as a key advisor to the Senior Executive team, the Controller will act in a critical position for the entire organization. The Controller will utilize their strong financial reporting skill sets and leverage their data-driven approach to improve overall business operations. The Controller will influence the company’s strategic growth initiatives and outcomes.

As the Controller, you will be instrumental in creating and improving the internal controls to maximize efficiencies across all procedures after you have mastered the Controllership duties. You will be responsible for finding effective ways to improve overall workflow by leveraging data-driven decisions. Taking a systematic and creative approach you will lead and develop the accounting procedures and accounting operations and apply your business mindset across all divisions in a critical leadership role.  As the responsibilities increase and the business grows, you will have the opportunity to work directly with the CFO to build, lead, and mentor a regional accounting team.  

This role involves managing assets, site developments, lease and sublease agreements, project analysis, and costing.  Ensuring accuracy in all financial reporting, and analyzing financial data to identify trends, patterns, and discrepancies to maximize profitability. The Controller will work closely with the Franchisees, collaborating with the CFO and the CEO on strategic decisions as the business experiences exciting opportunities, including the implementation of new POS and backend systems

What we are looking for: 

As the business expands rapidly from multiple locations in Nova Scotia to include New Brunswick in 2024 and Newfoundland in 2025, the successful candidate must possess a data-driven mindset, strong financial reporting skills, and an adaptable, and analytical attitude. Strong active listening skills and a confident yet humble demeanor will be advantageous. They should thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, adept at managing multiple priorities, meeting tight deadlines, and collaborating effectively with all team members. 

Requirements: 

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive financial accounting experience within a growing business where you have created and developed financial reports to support data-driven strategic business decisions.
  • Strong exposure and experience in creating and implementing internal controls and procedures while adapting within a growing retail-based business. 
  • Proficiency using current financial accounting softwares, and POS systems, mixed with intermediate to advanced MS Excel skill sets.
  • Self-motivated, solutions-orientated mindset combined with a passion to perform.
  • Keen eye for detail, strong organizational skills connected with exceptional time management abilities with a proven track record prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent communication, strong active listening and interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, financial institutions, external accountants, and business partners.
  • A positive inquisitive apporach complemented by a strong commitment to achieve work and personal-related goals with intent to constantly improve oneself. 
  • A proactive approach to foster a collaborative and growth-oriented work environment. 
  • A Bachelor’s degree in business with a focus on accounting. Professional certification such as CPA or an MBA is preferred but not required.
