Venor is proud to partner with Adsum for Women & Children in their search for an Accounting Assistant.
Adsum for Women & Children seeks to lead change to end homelessness through housing, services and advocacy. The organization provides emergency shelter and permanent housing and services and supports specifically for women, families and gender diverse persons who experience homelessness or housing insecurity. Currently, Adsum shelters almost 200 people between Adsum House and The Bridge. Hundreds more people, including children, temporarily housed in emergency units across HRM. Additionally, 100 people live in permanent affordable housing that is wholly owned and supported by Adsum. Adsum is currently renovating a four-plex to create more permanent housing for families and is expecting to break ground on a 16-unit development in the coming months.
The Accounting Assistant provides administrative and operational support to the Finance team at Adsum, helping to ensure accurate and reliable financial records. In this role, you will focus on processing routine financial transactions, supporting effective financial management, and assisting with the overall financial operations of the organization. Reporting to the Finance Manager, the Accounting Assistant contributes to the smooth and efficient functioning of the finance department. Success in this role requires a solid understanding of fundamental accounting principles, proficiency with accounting software, strong organizational skills, and meticulous attention to detail. The position also calls for strong communication and analytical abilities, along with a high degree of professionalism, integrity, and discretion when handling confidential financial information.
What you’ll be doing:
- Process accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions, including invoices, payments, and reconciliations to ensure accurate financial records.
- Enter and maintain vendor invoices within the accounting system and prepare payments for approval in accordance with organizational procedures.
- Record general ledger entries and maintain organized, up-to-date financial documentation.
- Reconcile Visa statements and investigate or resolve discrepancies as required.
- Post tenant monthly rent accurately and on time and record all tenant payments to the appropriate accounts.
- Assist with bank reconciliations and support month-end and year-end closing activities.
- Support the preparation of financial reports and maintain finance-related spreadsheets, reports, and documentation.
- Provide general administrative and operational support to the Finance department as required.
- Ensure adherence to organizational policies, accounting procedures, and regulatory requirements while maintaining strict confidentiality when handling sensitive financial information.
- Provide assistance with other finance-related activities as needed to support the team’s overall operations.
What we are looking for:
- 2+ years of relevant experience in a finance or accounting role.
- Strong understanding of basic bookkeeping principles, with the ability to accurately calculate, record, and post financial transactions.
- Degree or diploma in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is considered an asset; demonstrated accounting knowledge and skills are required.
- Hands-on experience working with Excel spreadsheets and accounting software (QuickBooks, SAGE Accounting).
- Proficiency in English and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy when working with financial information.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate professionalism when handling sensitive information.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Understanding of issues related to women’s poverty and homelessness, along with an interest in the social factors that contribute to housing insecurity.
- Familiarity with nonprofit or charitable accounting practices is considered an asset.

Compensation: This role offers a base salary of $60,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package.
