Position Summary:
Reporting to the Assistant Site Manager and the Site Manager, the Aquaculture Technician is responsible for general farm operations including feeding and husbandry of fish stocks.
Responsibilities:
In this dynamic role, you’ll be at the forefront of ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of our site, with a strong emphasis on biosecurity procedures and the effective use of biosecurity products. You’ll be responsible for overseeing capstan and crane operations, as well as managing escape response and prevention strategies to safeguard our operations. Your role will include the management of feed delivery, storage, and sampling procedures, alongside the implementation of efficient feeding practices.
You’ll play a key part in monitoring fish escape response, fuel delivery, and weight sampling, while also ensuring the safe docking of large vessels. Your expertise in conducting system and cage inspections, as well as plankton monitoring and response planning, will be crucial in maintaining the health and safety of our stock. Additionally, you’ll be involved in wildlife interaction planning, vessel operation, and the towing of equipment, ensuring that all machinery and equipment are well-maintained and programmed for optimal performance.
You will manage site setup, maintenance, and decommissioning activities. You’ll also be responsible for collecting stock ready for harvest or treatment using seine/corkline techniques, as well as overseeing mort collection procedures and classifications. Collecting environmental data and maintaining clean, tidy living quarters and work areas will round out your responsibilities, ensuring a well-organized and efficient site environment.
Qualifications:
In this role, you will ideally have an Aquaculture Certificate or Diploma from an accredited program, or a science-based degree in Aquaculture, Aquatic Resources, Biology, Marine Biology, or Fisheries Resource Management. Additionally, 3 years of related or general work experience will be highly valued in this position. In this position, will need the ability to lift 40 lbs/20 kg feed bags, and possess strong problem-solving skills. Well-developed interpersonal skills, along with good verbal and written communication abilities, are essential for effective collaboration and teamwork. Computer proficiency and a valid driver’s license are also required.
Working Conditions
Aquaculture Technicians work 10 hour work days, eight (8) consecutive days on following six (6) consecutive days off before returning to work.
