With more than 100 journalists, the SaltWire Network is the largest media organization in Atlantic Canada and is the home of 27 storied media titles across the East Coast, including The Chronicle Herald, the Cape Breton Post, The Telegram, The Guardian, as well as two dozen weekly community publications and Saltwire.com, which is viewed by approximately one million each week. With a history dating back almost 200 years telling Atlantic Canadians’ stories, SaltWire is the essential source for the news and stories about Atlantic Canada. Their mission is to provoke thought and action to make communities better.

The Director of Finance is responsible for the integrity of all financial reporting and related infrastructure for SaltWire Network Inc. This senior finance role is responsible for planning; budgeting; forecasting; variance analysis; profitability analysis; financial reporting; general ledger accounting; cash flow control and forecasts; banking relationships; investment; tax planning; tax reporting; and trust accounting and reporting.

Core Responsibilities:
● Develop and implement internal processes, systems and controls;
● Prepare monthly financial statements and variance summary;
● Lead the annual budget development process;
● Lead the year-end audit process and work with external auditors to prepare annual financial statements for stakeholders;
● Cash Flow Management – prepare daily cash forecast report and cash flow projections;
● Reconcile general ledger accounts;
● Oversee day-to-day accounting and finance activities; ensuring efficient and effective operation of the finance department;
● Foster relationships with internal clients and key external partners including banks, financing institutions, external auditors, etc.;
● Collaborate with department managers about financial statements and budgets;
● Coach, mentor, develop and manage finance staff to meet the changing needs of the organization;
● Banking – Approve payment files using online banking.

As the ideal candidate, you have seven years of senior level experience, paired with a professional accounting designation. You bring strong business acumen and exceptional relationship building skills coupled with a drive for results. You are someone who is dynamic, motivating and team-oriented with an internal drive to continuously hit goals and deadlines. The successful candidate will have a proactive mentality with curiosity and desire to learn and grow.

You bring your creative mindset to the table, and have a desire to find solutions and overcome hurdles. You support your colleagues by being empathetic and interested in others, and you have a desire to learn more about their needs and a genuine want to help improve employees’ experiences. Finally, the Director of Finance must be willing to learn and comfortable with continuously changing entrepreneurial opportunities.
