Venor is proud to partner with Moog Focal Technologies in their search for an Embedded Systems Design Engineer. Focal Technologies specializes in custom electrical slip rings, fiber optic rotary joints, hydraulic utility swivels, fiber optic multiplexers, and subsea communication solutions for the worldwide marine industry including shipbuilding, ROV, oil and gas, seismic, FPSO turret and oceanographic applications, in addition to military, industrial and renewable applications.

What you’ll be doing:

In this technically diverse role, you will design and support specialized embedded designs for challenging applications that require real-time Ethernet, digital video, serial controls, fibre-optic telemetry, and IoT-based condition monitoring. Focal’s rugged electronics products are deployed in harsh environments around the world, including underwater robotic vehicles, subsea control networks for oil and gas infrastructure, and advanced sensor pods for aircraft and security platforms. Key responsibilities include:

  • Design and development of hi-rel embedded software/firmware and related interface circuits for new products, including support/enhancement of existing designs, within an ISO-9001 system 
  • Design and development of Verilog HDL for FPGA
  • Design and testing of analogue and digital circuits for power, signal, and bus interfaces
  • Develop concepts and evaluate new hardware, software, and tools for new product platforms and innovative solutions based on both customer needs and Focal’s technology roadmaps
  • Support PCBA layout, prototyping, testing (board and system level), documentation, and production
  • Support project management teams and lead design teams where applicable
  • Mentor junior electronic/embedded designers
  • Lead design projects

What we are looking for:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics Engineering Technologist with 7+ years of experience
  • Experience with ARM or other RISC-based microcontrollers
  • Embedded code design, e.g. C, C# and/or C++, and RTOS for real-time applications
  • Strong ability to work in small teams 
  • Strong technical documentation and communication/presentation skills
  • Self-motivated and highly proactive work style
  • Ability to receive security clearance in a controlled goods facility

Qualifications (preferred):

  • Experience with FPGA designs, including Verilog or VHDL, simulation, and testing
  • Experience with multi-gigabit designs, digital video, and/or fiber optics
  • Experience with the design and testing of .NET-based GUIs
  • Experience with Python
  • Experience with analogue, digital, and power circuit design
  • Knowledge of video signals, serial data signals, Ethernet protocols, and related real-time solutions
  • Knowledge of design methods for hi-rel designs (code and hardware)
  • Knowledge of product and packaging solutions for harsh environments
