Manager, Electronics & Embedded Systems

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Manager, Electronics & Embedded Systems leads the electronics and embedded consulting practice, with primary responsibility for technical leadership, project strategy, team capacity planning, and client engagement. This is a senior leadership role focused on building high-performing project teams, shaping technical direction, and ensuring successful delivery across a diverse portfolio of embedded hardware and firmware programs.

Approximately 50% of this role is leadership, planning, and business-facing work, including project strategy development, collaboration with Business Development (BD) and Program Management (PM), and client engagement. The remaining focus is on technical oversight, senior-level design reviews, and ensuring the quality, feasibility, and scalability of solutions delivered by the team.

Leadership & People Management Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership for the Electronics & Embedded Systems group, setting technical direction, standards, and best practices.
  • Build and maintain project plans in collaboration with BD and PM teams, including scoping, staffing strategies, schedules, and risk assessments.
  • Lead resource planning and capacity management, matching team members to projects based on skills, availability, and development goals.
  • Conduct senior technical reviews to ensure designs meet performance, regulatory, manufacturability, and quality expectations.
  • Mentor and coach engineers, fostering technical growth, accountability, and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Perform regular check-ins, support career development, and contribute to performance management activities.
  • Support hiring activities, including candidate evaluation, interviews, and onboarding.

Client Engagement

  • Partner with Business Development to support technical scoping, feasibility assessments, and effort estimation for proposals and quotations.
  • Engage directly with clients to understand business objectives, functional requirements, constraints, and regulatory considerations.
  • Translate customer needs into high-level technical strategies and project execution plans.
  • Act as a senior technical representative of the consultancy, building trust with clients and supporting long-term relationships.

Technical Domains & Project Types (Oversight & Strategic Leadership)

The Manager provides senior technical oversight and guidance across projects that may include the following technologies and system types. Hands-on involvement may vary by project, but responsibility includes architecture direction, design review, and technical risk management.

Embedded Hardware & Electronics

  • Embedded system architecture spanning hardware, firmware, and system integration.
  • Analog, low-power, high-speed digital, RF, and mixed-signal circuit designs.
  • Schematic capture and PCB layout using tools such as Altium Designer or KiCad, with DFM and DFT considerations.
  • Component selection, supply-chain considerations, prototype builds, hardware bring-up, and verification testing.

Firmware & Embedded Software

  • Microcontroller-based systems (e.g., STM32, Nordic nRF, Arduino-class platforms).
  • Firmware development in C/C++, including bare-metal and RTOS-based systems (FreeRTOS, Zephyr).
  • Communication protocols such as I²C, SPI, CAN, USB, Ethernet, and RS-485.
  • Embedded Linux systems, including configuration, driver integration, and application-level development.

Connected & IoT Systems

  • IoT-enabled products incorporating Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular, and LoRa technologies.
  • System-level considerations for power management, security, reliability, and scalability.

Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration

  • Collaboration with mechanical, automation, software, manufacturing, and external partners to deliver complete system-level solutions.
  • Coordination with vendors and manufacturing partners to support production readiness and lifecycle management.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 8+ years of experience in embedded systems development across full product or system lifecycles.
  • 3+ years in a technical leadership or management role leading engineers or cross-functional teams.
  • Strong background in embedded hardware and firmware, with the ability to provide senior-level technical oversight and design review.
  • Demonstrated experience in project planning, scope definition, scheduling, and risk management.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with clients, internal teams, and external partners.
  • Experience in consulting, custom engineering, industrial, or product-development environments is an asset.
  • Candidates must be licensed, or eligible for licensure, as a Professional Engineer (or Engineer-in-Training) with Engineers Nova Scotia and maintain licensure in good standing for the duration of employment
