Venor is proud to partner with ReelData in their search for a Mechanical Engineer / Hardware Lead to join their team in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

ReelData develops intelligent aquaculture technology, and its ReelWeight platform delivers reliable, field ready solutions in demanding real world environments. This role is central to advancing the product line, while driving R&D and continuous improvement initiatives for future product iterations.

Through its flagship SaaS platforms, ReelAppetite and ReelWeight, ReelData helps customers optimize feeding efficiency, monitor fish growth, and make smarter operational decisions. As a fast-growing company at the forefront of digital transformation in aquaculture, ReelData offers a collaborative, mission-driven environment where technology and sustainability intersect.

What You’ll Be Doing

Reporting directly to the Head of Hardware, this role owns the mechanical and electro-mechanical design of the ReelWeight product from concept through production, including the development and execution of verification and validation test plans and leadership of design-for-manufacturing efforts with external partners. It supports product deployment through on-site field visits and remote troubleshooting, proactively identifying and resolving issues before, during, and after installations. The Mechanical Engineer leads troubleshooting and root cause analysis for deployed systems, collaborates closely with cross-functional teams throughout the deployment cycle, and delivers client-specific mechanical design and integration work as needed. It also oversees hardware inventory, procurement, logistics, and shipping to maintain build readiness.

What We Are Looking For

  • 5+ years of professional experience in mechanical or hardware engineering
  • Strong hands-on experience with mechanical systems and fabrication
  • Working knowledge of electrical components and electro-mechanical integration
  • Experience with Python, C/C++, and VBA programming
  • Experience using CAD tools (SolidWorks) and design standards
  • Experience taking hardware from prototype to field deployment
  • Experience with data visualization and manipulation tools (Excel, Grafana)
  • Ability to work independently and take full ownership of deliverables
  • Strong collaboration skills across engineering and non-engineering teams
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for field work

ReelData offers a high-trust environment where engineers have direct ownership of meaningful technology and a clear connection to its real-world impact, supported by a flexible, collaborative culture that encourages continuous learning and experimentation. This role provides hands-on technical leadership across the ReelWeight lifecycle, from design and validation through deployment and continuous improvement, with ownership of both current production and next-generation development in partnership with internal teams and manufacturing partners. Experience with design for manufacturing, ruggedized or marine hardware, machine vision or optical systems, and supporting hardware in real-world field environments is considered an asset.
