Our client, West Nova Fuels, operates in multiple regions within Nova Scotia, offering a range of fuel products and services to both residential and commercial customers. In central and western mainland Nova Scotia, they provide heating oil, diesel, and gasoline. In the South Shore, Annapolis Valley, and Halifax areas, they supply propane and offer propane appliances for sale.
On behalf of West Nova Fuels, we are hiring a Safety and Operations Manager in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Overview:
The Safety and Operations Manager supports the General Manager in overseeing safety protocols, operational processes, and fleet management across the organization. This pivotal role provides strategic guidance to branch operations, ensuring the effective maintenance of terminal facilities and the efficient management of the vehicle fleet—both critical to the company’s daily functions. Additionally, the Safety and Operations Manager leads the Prudent Operations program across all regions, driving a strong safety culture and optimizing operational performance throughout the company.
Primary Responsibilities
- Safety Program Management: Implement and monitor safety procedures aligned with the Suncor Prudent Operations program to drive continuous improvement in safety performance and support a strong safety culture.
- AWE System Expertise: Act as the primary liaison for the AWE on-board truck computer system, directly interfacing with AWE and providing support to branches and the Lunenburg office for effective daily usage.
- Fleet Oversight: Maintain an updated fleet list, document all operational costs, and provide recommendations to optimize fleet utilization. Collaborate with the General Manager on fleet replacement plans.
- Branch Operational Support: Assist branches in the maintenance of the West Nova bulk plant and cardlock network, ensuring consistent standards across locations.
- Carrier Relationship Management: Manage relationships with third-party carriers to ensure efficient and cost-effective delivery of products to bulk terminals.
Secondary Responsibilities
- Policy Development: Support the General Manager in creating and implementing policies related to operational health and safety, procedures, and environmental standards.
- Regulatory and Technical Awareness: Stay updated on technical advancements, delivery codes, and regulations relevant to company operations to ensure compliance and readiness.
- Additional Duties: Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the General Manager.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in operations and safety management, preferably within logistics or industrial settings, combined with a proven track record in fleet management and supporting branch-level operations. Expertise in onboard vehicle computer systems, such as AWE, is crucial, along with the ability to effectively manage third-party carrier relationships to ensure timely, cost-efficient deliveries. A deep understanding of industry-specific safety codes, regulatory standards, and environmental policies is essential for maintaining compliance and operational readiness. Strong analytical skills are key to interpreting operational data, controlling costs, and delivering actionable insights for continuous improvement. Exceptional communication and leadership abilities are equally important, as this role requires collaboration across multiple branches to uphold a consistent culture of safety and operational excellence.
