Adsum for Women & Children is a registered charity with a long history of working with individuals and families who experience poverty, homelessness, and marginalization. We believe that everyone has the right to a safe and secure home. Our mission is to lead change to end homelessness through housing, services, and advocacy. We have a staff team of more than 160 people. They provide a variety of services and supports, some available on 24/7/365 basis.

Adsum operates two emergency shelters: (Adsum House serving women, trans and gender diverse persons and The Bridge which shelters all genders); three permanent multi-units housing sites (Adsum Court, The Alders, The Sunflower); family condominium units and several rental properties throughout HRM. Our housing support team offers outreach support and diversion services from locations in Dartmouth and Halifax. We also have offices in hotels where significant numbers of clients are being sheltered.

The Opportunity 

Venor is proud to partner with Adsum in their search for a Human Resources Manager to join their team. Reporting to the Executive Director and working collaboratively with Adsum’s Culture & Diversity Manager, you will lead and deliver ongoing people and culture initiatives, playing an important role overseeing all HR functions. In collaboration with the Culture & Diversity Manager, you will shape strategic workforce and succession planning, implementing innovative recruitment approaches, and attracting top talent to the team. This collaboration effort extends to various facets of HR management, including retention, training and development, compensation and benefits, policy administration, employee management, and employee relations. Recognized as a strategic business partner, this role presents an opportunity to drive impactful people initiatives within a forward-thinking organization.

You will play an important role in nurturing strong employee relations, providing support, addressing concerns, and fostering a culture of respect and collaboration. You will ensure all HR initiatives are top-notch from employee recognition to performance management. As a key member of the HR team, you will oversee recruitment activities, appointments, terminations, and leaves, while maintaining secure and confidential personnel files. Upholding labour laws and organizational policies will be crucial as you work to create a fair and equitable workplace for all employees. You will work closely with the Manager of Culture & Diversity, to dismantle systemic barriers in recruitment, advancement, and retention, guaranteeing top-tier employment equity strategies.

Your responsibilities will include managing student hires’ activities. This includes funding applications, job descriptions, postings, interviews, and offer letters, as well as addressing employee performance and attendance issues, handling disciplinary actions, grievances, and conducting comprehensive exit interviews. 

About You

As the ideal candidate, you bring a minimum of five years of progressive experience in a Human Resources role, coupled with a positive and proactive attitude. While a Bachelor’s degree or certificate program in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field is a bonus, your passion and drive truly set you apart. Experience navigating unionized environments and a CPHR designation is also highly desirable for this role. 

Your hands-on approach to work reflects your desire to make a significant impact on the organization’s HR function. Your exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, effortlessly bridge connections across the organization. You exude confidence in leading new initiatives and championing HR best practices. Guiding people through change is your forte, and your integrity, professionalism, and commitment to confidentially are second to none. You stay ahead of the curve on emerging technologies in HR and have a deep understanding of employment laws and regulations. Your insight into effective strategies for the not-for-profit sector, makes you a true asset. 

Rate of pay

This is a management position. Salary is based on credentials, and experience and within a range set by the organization from $75,000 up.
